Presents Mini-Grants for Conservation and Environmental Education

The MISSION of Birmingham Audubon Society is to promote conservation and a greater knowledge of birds, their habitat, and the natural world.
Who can apply? Elementary, middle school, high school, and homeschool educators in the Birmingham area (Jefferson, Shelby, Bibb, Blount, Chilton, St. Clair, and Walker counties). To be considered for a mini-grant, organizations must be non-profit and tax-exempt from the IRS public charity status or be public entities qualifying under Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code.
What is the maximum grant award? Up to $500 per grant.
What will the grant cover? Funds may be used to cover expenses for field trips, student transportation, classroom speakers, and projects such as school wildlife and butterfly gardens, bird feeding stations, and outdoor classrooms to further our mission of supporting conservation and environmental education. The focus of wildlife gardens and outdoor classrooms must be on plants and animals native to Alabama. Vegetable gardens do not qualify for mini-grant funds. Refer to the attached list of approved field trips and speakers as well as project suggestions. Please be creative!
Deadline for application? Application must be postmarked no later than June 30, 2013.
Details: The Birmingham Audubon Society (BAS) mission statement is "to promote conservation and a greater knowledge of birds, their habitat and the natural world.” To support our mission we are offering mini-grants for up to $500 to support conservation and environmental education in the Greater Birmingham area. Funds may be used for field trips, classroom speakers, and development of outdoor classrooms, ponds, nature trails, native-wildlife and butterfly gardens or other types of natural habitats. Projects are not limited to the recommendations on the attachments below.
To apply for the Birmingham Audubon Society mini-grant, the teacher or project coordinator must complete the attached Mini-grant Application and submit three copies to the BAS address on the application. Grants may be used only for supplies, minor equipment, educational materials, entrance and program fees and student transportation expenses for field trips. The grants do not cover stipends, salaries or indirect costs.
Applications will be reviewed by the Education Committee of the Birmingham Audubon Society. Successful applicants will be notified by July 31, 2013.
- Refer to list of approved field trips, speakers, and project suggestions.
- Complete your project and return Report Guide to BAS by May 3, 2014. If student pictures are used in the report, a signed Photo Release Form must accompany report. The Report Guide and Photo Release Forms will be sent to successful applicants.
- Detail how Birmingham Audubon Society sponsorship will be acknowledged in presentations or projects.
