Waterfowl Family Fun Bird Walk

Join us this winter for a Family Bird Walk led by members of Birmingham Audubon Society. On this full day trip we will travel to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, a waterfowl hot spot, to locate and identify some of the waterfowl that winter in this diverse habitat.  We will meet at 8 a.m. at an exit off I-65 near Fultondale and carpool to the refuge. Our first stop will be Wheeler Visitor Center and wildlife observation building where we will get familiar with some of the birds we will see when we get to go into the refuge behind locked gates. Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Sandhill Cranes, Buffleheads, Coots, Mallards, White Pelicans and many other species of ducks and woodland birds will be seen throughout the day.

Birmingham Audubon will provide binoculars for your use and instructions will be given on how to use them to locate and identify the birds. We will also share our spotting scopes for closer views of birds.

Children ages 5 and up are welcome with a parent or grandparent. This is a full day outing but we will be driving from viewing spot to spot, so there will be plenty of down time for the children. You will have the option of leaving after lunch if you cannot stay the entire day. The full day trip should be completed by 3:00 p.m. or possibly sooner. Adults without children are welcome also! This is one of the best times to see all these special winter visitors, so we hope you can join us!
